A recall is a race against time and reputation. The question - which units are affected, and where are they now - has a precise answer somewhere in your data. The only thing that matters is how fast you can pull it.
Why standardized barcodes matter
GS1 barcodes encode more than a part number. A single GS1-128 or DataMatrix can carry the GTIN, the lot number, the serial, and the expiry - all in application identifiers any compliant scanner can read. That means the same label travels cleanly from your supplier, through your warehouse, into production, and out to your customer.
When every movement is captured against that standardized identifier, you build genealogy automatically: this finished lot was made from these component lots, received on these documents, from these suppliers.
From days to clicks
Without genealogy, a recall is a spreadsheet archaeology project - cross-referencing receipts, production logs and shipping records by hand. With it, you start from the affected lot and walk the graph in both directions: backward to the source, forward to every customer who received an affected unit.
That's the difference between a recall that takes a team three days and one that takes an analyst two clicks. The data was always there; standardized barcoding is what makes it queryable.
